Adelaide Koala and Wildlife Centre is seeking a veterinarian with demonstrated experience in Australian wildlife medicine to join Adelaide’s first dedicated koala and wildlife vet clinic.
This is a permanent part-time position offering flexibility to suit different lifestyles and financial needs. The role can be structured as:
- 2–3 days per week in wildlife medicine at AKAWC, and
- Additional days (2 +) in small animal practice at Plympton Vet Clinic,
creating a hybrid position of up to 5 days per week for those seeking additional hours and income.
- For veterinarians wanting a wildlife-only focus, 2–3 days per week at AKAWC remains available. We are committed to flexibility and welcome discussions around structuring the role to best suit individual lifestyle and career goals.
About Adelaide Koala and Wildlife Centre
Adelaide Koala and Wildlife Centre is a registered charity operating a small, purpose-driven clinic providing free veterinary care to injured, ill, and orphaned wildlife, with the aim of treatment, rehabilitation, and release.
You will work in collaboration with other veterinarians and nurses, alongside our dedicated volunteer base and extended wildlife carer network. This is a hands-on, practical role requiring adaptability and sound clinical judgement when managing cases within available resources.
Beyond clinical responsibilities, we are seeking a veterinarian who can help lead the Centre in remaining at the forefront of wildlife medicine, while championing education, collaboration, and public outreach initiatives.
Key Responsibilities within the Wildlife Clinic
- Triage, assess, and treat injured, sick, and orphaned Australian wildlife in both inpatient and outpatient settings
- Develop and implement treatment plans using industry-leading and evidence-based methods
- Apply species-specific knowledge to diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation planning
- Manage cases from admission through to outcome in collaboration with the veterinary team
- Contribute to clinical governance through the review, development, and implementation of protocols and guidelines
- Support consistent, evidence-based clinical decision-making across the Centre
- Provide clinical guidance to staff, volunteers, and wildlife carers
- Maintain high standards of animal welfare, ethics, and professional practice
- Participate in disease surveillance, reporting, and post-mortem examinations where required
- Participate in meetings, training, and ongoing professional development
Essential Criteria
- Degree in Veterinary Science registerable in South Australia
- Demonstrated veterinary experience working with Australian wildlife (essential)
- Demonstrated veterinary experience working in a small animal clinic (if seeking the hybrid role)
- Strong understanding of Australian wildlife handling, medicine, anaesthesia, and rehabilitation principles
- Experience reviewing, developing, or implementing clinical protocols
- Ability to apply emergency and general veterinary medicine skills to wildlife species
- Confidence working collaboratively within a small clinic team while recognising professional limits
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work autonomously while ensuring clinic requirements are met
- Availability for 2–3 wildlife days per week, with the option to expand to a hybrid wildlife/small animal role if desired
Desirable Experience
- Experience working with South Australian koala populations
- Ability to provide occasional additional cover for sick or annual leave
