Our vet services to wildlife in Adelaide

Our wildlife veterinary team provides urgent medical assessment and treatment for injured wildlife throughout Adelaide and South Australia.

Conditions commonly treated include:

• Vehicle strikes and dog/cat attack injuries
• Burns and heat stress
• Fractures and soft tissue injuries
• Dehydration and malnutrition
• Infectious disease including chlamydia in koalas

We also see many orphans of all species throughout the year.  Our goal is to give high quality vet treatment and care to every animal with the aim of releasing the wildlife to specialised wildlife carers until the animals can return to the wild. We then support these animals whilst in care, ensuring their carers always have a clinic to provide any ongoing vet care.

Each animal receives comprehensive examination, diagnostic imaging and evidence based medical management to stabilise and support recovery.

Koala Veterinary Care South Australia

Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Centre is a leading provider of koala veterinary care in South Australia.

Our koala veterinary services include:

• Chlamydia diagnosis and medical treatment
• Disease diagnosis and treatment
• Injury assessment and wound management
• Fluid therapy and supportive treatment for all injuries and disease
• Ongoing health monitoring and rehabilitation planning

Hundreds of koalas receive veterinary treatment at our wildlife clinic each year, making koala care a core focus of our clinical expertise.  We work closely with koala rescuers and carers all year round to make this happen.

Native Bird and Mammal Veterinary Treatment

As a dedicated wildlife vet South Australia service, we provide veterinary care for birds, possums and other native wildlife species.

Wildlife treatment services include:

• Medical and supportive care
• Injury assessment, wound management, ongoing health monitoring
• Rehabilitation preparation for release

Our goal is successful rehabilitation and safe return to natural habitat wherever possible. Once again, working with rescue groups and dedicated carers make this possible.

Veterinary Student Placements and Clinical Experience

Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Centre recognises that developing knowledge and clinical understanding is essential to strengthening wildlife veterinary care in South Australia.

We offer limited educational placements for veterinary students and approved trainees seeking structured wildlife veterinary experience as part of formal educational requirements. Due to the specialised nature of wildlife veterinary care, placement positions are strictly limited, with priority given to veterinary students.

Placements provide exposure to wildlife assessment, treatment protocols and animal husbandry. As part of our wonderful partnership with Plympton Vet Clinic, some placement components may include time within the small animal clinical environment to broaden practical experience, which allows for a unique placement not found anywhere else in South Australia.

Enquiries regarding educational placements or work experience related to formal study requirements can be directed via email for further information.

Visitor Access

Adelaide Koala and Wildlife Centre is a working wildlife veterinary clinic, not a sanctuary, zoo or tourist attraction. To protect the health and wellbeing of our patients, we do not offer public visits, tours or general visitor access to the clinic.

Our entire focus is on providing professional veterinary treatment for injured and unwell native animals in a calm, low-stress clinical environment. Every koala, possum and native animal in our care is a patient, not on display, and their recovery depends on minimal disturbance.

We completely understand the desire to see koalas up close - they are extraordinary animals! If you would like to experience koalas and South Australian wildlife in person, we warmly recommend visiting Cleland Wildlife Park in the Adelaide Hills, where healthy animals can be seen in a beautiful natural setting.

The best way to support our patients is not to visit but to donate. Every contribution funds the free veterinary care that gives injured wildlife a second chance at life in the wild.

Research & Development

Sustainability is key to the long term protection of South Australian wildlife. In addition to providing free wildlife veterinary care, Adelaide Koala & Wildlife Centre supports research into koala health, disease management and evidence-based wildlife treatment practices.

Our clinical experience treating hundreds of koalas each year contributes to a growing understanding of key health challenges affecting koalas in South Australia, including infectious disease, environmental stress and injury patterns.

Through ongoing collaboration within the veterinary and research community, we remain committed to advancing knowledge in wildlife veterinary care and improving treatment approaches for wildlife across South Australia.
